Week of the Young Child

April 14 – 20, 2013

Thank you for sharing your favorite book!

We will add yours to our list shortly.

Madeline
Catherine Borgia
I loved the drawings, the rhymes, the adventures of spunky Madeline and the restorative calm of the "old house in Paris that is covered in vines...." I loved those books so much, I names my older daughter Madeline!
Winnie the Pooh & The House at Pooh Corner
Ann Phillips
They're all about relationships, and probably, importantly, my parents read the stories to me.
The Black Snowman
Betty Medina
The story is a fantasy, based on history. The illustrations are beautiful and the story is filled with excitement.
Charlotte's Web
Cheryl Stephens

One of the timeless classics! This book teaches children about emotional connections and that though there is happiness and sadness in the world life still goes on...I'm not a fan of movies depicting books but, they did a good job with this one...

Time to Sleep" by Denise Fleming
Pat Krugman
I love the vibrant, hand-colored paper illustrations and the story of many animals as they prepare for winter hibernation or torpor. When I share this book with my Preschoolers, I like bringing this story to life by bringing in Puppets for each child to "act" as one of the animals in the story. "Time to Sleep" is a wonderful introduction to winter, hibernation, and diversity in the animal kingdom.
Blueberries For Sale
Wendy Rolnick
"Kerplunk, kerplunk, kerplop."
Louise The Big Cheese
Jody-kay Mickens
My daughter loves this book. This is a great book because it taught my child that while participating in a school play or an event that even if you are not assigned as the main character that everyone plays an important role and it does not make you less of a person and shoud not disciurage your dreams. In addition if a friend or classmate is assigned a part that you desired to play it's polite to remain courteous and friendly.
Charlotte's Web, E.B. White
Susan Schefflein
As a child growing up on a farm, I identified with the little girl, Fern and her love for Wilbur. It filled me with hope that a clever, wonderful friend such as Charlotte could give Wilbur confidence and know how to rescue him. it gave me so much insight (which I probably didn't understand at the time) about how people's perceptions can be changed and how important the love of friends is and the sadness of losing friends. I still cry over Charlotte's death.

A simple story about a tree who loves a boy unconditionally. The boy brings such joy to the tree. It's an analogy for the love that a parent has for a child.

The storyline is humerous and entertaining, there is a thought provoking lesson within the story, the rhyming is fantastic and makes it a fun story to read.

P-Penny and His Little Red Cart" by Amy Wentworth Stone
Shawn Cribari
This is a charming chapter book that my mother read to my siblings and me, and we never tired of it. Set in a small city during the 1940s, the story is about "P-Penny " a 10-year-old boy being raised by his widowed mother and his grandfather, who home-schools him while his mother works at the local library. He has many "adventures" while trying to earn money by transporting fruits and other items in his little red cart. The story is a vivid rendering of childhood in a simpler time, during which P-Penny's friendship with the lamplighter's daughter Belinda, opens his eyes to the financial poverty and wealth of love in her family. P-Penny matures throughout the course of the story, through his relationships with his mother, his grandfather, Belinda, and "Mr. Norman Ames," whom he dislikes intensely in the beginning of the book. Unfortunately, the book has been out of print for many years, but used copies are sometimes available on Amazon.
Susie and the Dog School
Madelaine Pilpel
I had a puppy cocker spaniel just like Susie.
Jenny Learns A Lesson, Gyo Fujikawa
Arlene Leuzzi

This is a beautifully illustrated book about friendship. This was actualy my daughter's favorite book which I read at least 500 times and had it been available when I was a child I know my mom would have had to read it to me 500 times as well.

Well, I never had a book during my childhod and I don't remember anyone reading me a book. But I would like to share my daughter's favorite book as a child. Since my litter one grew up by my side starting school was very difficult for her. The Kissing Hand was a very good tool to make her understand it was time to go to school. Since then I have kept loving the book and I still read it to the kids in my daycare!

This is a book for children ages 7 and up. It is one of the first books written about Hiroshima, and still one of the few. It was not written until 1977. Our children need more book like this so they will not fear what they do not understand. Sadako faces her future with spirit and hope. In hopes of undestanding peace more books like this need to be written for our future leaders.

It was entertaining, inspirational and well-written. The March family was poor and everyone struggled, but they worked to resolve their interpersonal difficulties and overcome their problems with grace and humor.
HORTON HATCHES THE EGG and
OH LA LA MAX IN LOVE

Susan Klope
These are both books I adored reading to my children and now my grandson.Hortons story is one of purity, goodness , and just plain doing the "right thing". It ends just as it should. The World Of Winnie The Pooh And The World Of Christopher Robin
Deb Tashoff

Where ever I go there's always Pooh, there's always Pooh and me"...I loved the friendship and tenderness Pooh and Christopher Robin shared. I loved Pooh's grand adventures and mishaps with all his friends!

Madeline and the Bad Hat
Suzanne Boydstun

I was very shy and the character of Pepito fascinated me because he was naughty. Despite his antics, he was the hero at the end of the book.

The Priness and the Pea
Susan Golob Poltarak

Who knew that someone else could be as particular as me about some things! What a relief to know that someonen else could be a picky as me. When I was younger it was mostly about food and clothes but as I got older it could be about making sure a picture was hung at the correct height, setting up a classroom block area, finding the right resource for a parent... It's become both an asset and can also lead me (and family) to frustration.

Charlotte's Web by E.B. White
Renette Bayne Issaka

I had to read it when I was in middle school. But I read it several times after that. It help foster my love of reading and it's a beautiful story of true friendship.
