Building Speech and Language Skills
This article discusses developmental milestones regarding speech and language in infants and toddlers and then provides suggestions as to what parents and childcare givers can do in order to promote their child’s linguistic maturation. Some ideas that the article provides include talking to and with your child, listening to your child’s needs and responding in a conversational manner, reading to your child, exploring with your child and talking as you do so, and encouraging your child to do things on his or her own with your direction.

This article discusses a program in Decatur, Illinois called Baby TALK (Teaching Activities for Learning and Knowledge) that is dedicated towards improving the parent-child relationship from an early stage, that is upon birth or, in some cases, during prenatal care. Baby TALK focuses upon working with parents to teach them about their child’s development in order to promote best practices when it comes to promoting literacy later on in life. Baby TALK provides an integral support network for parents and childcare givers, bringing together many different groups in order to ensure that parents and childcare givers have access to all the resources they need for their child.
