READ TO ME . . .  AND I WILL READ

Learning to read and write starts long before first grade and has long-lasting effects. However, many children in Westchester County do not have their own books.

The Child Care Council of Westchester and Westchester Association for the Education of Young Children will celebrate the Week of the Young Child with their 5th Annual Children’s Book Drive from April 15—May 10, 2013.Books will be donated to Westchester programs serving children in need.

Parents, providers, businesses and the general public are being asked to donate books in good condition without violent imagery.  We especially welcome books depicting diverse ages, abilities and cultures, for children ages birth to 12.

Books can be dropped off at the Child Care Council of Westchester at 313 Central Park Avenue in Scarsdale Monday-Friday, 9am—5pm, with occasional Saturday hours.

Children’s Book Drive

The Council is launching our 5th Annual Children’s Book Drive on April 15th.   Since 2009, we’ve distributed thousands of high quality, gently used books to dozens of child care and after school programs serving economically-disadvantaged children throughout our county.    We need your help to reach our goal of 3,000 books.  From April 15 to May 10 we are accepting gently-used books for children 0-12, at our office at 313 Central Park Avenue, in Scarsdale. Other drop-off sites are listed on our websiteThis is a terrific project for schools, youth groups, businesses or other organizations.  Please contact Miriam Kerness at (914) 761-3456 ext. 134 with any questions. Thank you for making a difference in children’s lives!

Week of the Young Child

The Week of the Young Child™ is an annual celebration sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the world's largest early childhood education association, with nearly 80,000 members and a network of over 300 local, state, and regional Affiliates. The purpose of the Week of the Young Child™ is to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs. NAEYC first established the Week of the Young Child™ in 1971, recognizing that the early childhood years (birth through age 8) create the foundation for children's success in school and later life. The 2013 Week of the Young Child™ is April 14th –20th and the theme is Early Years Are Learning Years®.
